More and more children worldwide are being oppressed by war, poverty and natural disasters. The most vulnerable among them often pay the highest price. Save the Children is committed to these children. We believe in a world where children can grow up healthily, have the opportunity to learn and play and are protected from violence and exploitation. We are where they need us. All over the world and in the most difficult circumstances. In times of crisis, we are one of the first organizations to provide life-saving assistance to children and their families. We provide safety, a place to play, education and stand up for their rights.
What will you do in this role?
As a Financial Programme Manager (FPM) you bridge the gap between finance and programme. This means you speak both the language of a programme manager and understand the basic programme cycle, and speak the language of a finance professional and have a firm grasp on the workings of a financial administration and financial audit process. The FPM is responsible for all project-related external financial reports and donor compliancy, providing (ad hoc) internal management information and all financial coordination with our field offices. The FPM is also involved in new business development by bringing financial and donor knowledge into the proposal writing process of our programme teams.
The FPM works autonomously but never alone. The FPM constantly switches between several teams: Netherlands-based programme managers and financial administrators, financial counterparts in the project countries and of course FPM colleagues with whom you share experiences and rely on for technical support. You are the spider in the financial web which means that stakeholder management is a key skill any FPM should possess.
The ideal candidate is a strong coordinator that knows how to prioritize, balance time and effort to get the results the organization is looking for, and an effective communicator in a multicultural context. A solid FPM can work under pressure and is therefore a master in managing his/her workload, who also knows when it’s time to reach out for support. The FPM should have very strong interpersonal and intercultural skills that are needed to get the desired results on time. To succeed in its role, the FPM should be able to switch effortlessly between pragmatic, short term, and strategic, long-term approaches, always keeping an eye on the end result. You can perform your tasks without micro-managing your projects, but know when it’s time to zoom in. It goes without saying that working with numbers comes easy and that Excel has no secrets for any successful FPM.
The role provides a unique opportunity for financially adept project managers to be heavily involved in humanitarian and development programming, with nearly daily contact with our field offices, and the possibility of travelling to our project countries to support locally.
About You:
- You are smart, flexible in your work approach, and an effective communicator.
- You bring enthusiasm, positivity and a ‘can-do attitude’.
- You have experience with institutional donors such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union (DG ECHO or DG INTPA), UN organizations, or similar.
- You have plenty of experience with financial reporting to be able to coach others.
- You love to work with numbers and are a wizard with Excel.
- You understand, and preferably have worked in, the countries and context that we run our projects in.
- You have an excellent command of English, both written and verbally (Dutch is not a prerequisite).
- You are already eligible to work in the Netherlands (we do not sponsor positions unfortunately) and you have a (future) residential address in the Netherlands.
What we offer:
- What you do helps millions of children worldwide;
- Salary of course. We follow the salary scales of the government based on a 36-hour working week. This position is classified according to salary scale 10 (minimum €3.404,39 and maximum €5.389,87);
- Your travel costs based on public transport will be fully reimbursed; you will receive an NS business card for this. We attach great importance to the climate and do not offer mileage reimbursement for motorized commuting;
- Annually 5 vacation weeks based on a 36-hours working week;
- The possibility to save extra leave days;
- Favorable pension scheme with Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn;
- Plenty of room for training & development;
- A human employer, that is constantly evolving. That means a place where you can be yourself, shape changes together with us and grow individually and as an organization.
Offers are subject to positive references and the submission of a recent Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG).
Why do we ask for references and a VOG?
Save the Children participates in the Inter-Agency Misconduct Disclosure Scheme. As a children's rights organization that fights abuse – in whatever form – we first of all want to be able to guarantee that our own employees are not guilty of this or have done so. That's why we participate in the Inter-Agency Misconduct Disclosure Scheme. And we purchase standardized references when you apply for a job with us. By applying you agree to this.
What kind of employer is Save the Children?
In the Netherlands you work together with approximately 160 colleagues, but you are also part of an international network of more than 25,000 colleagues in 120 countries. We are the world's largest children's rights organization, but that doesn't mean our organization is impersonal. We make sure that everyone's voice – just like that of the children we fight for – is heard. That every colleague can be themselves and develop further.
At Save the Children, we are proud of our diversity. That is why we invite everyone to apply for a job with us, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religious and/or cultural background, personality and/or other visible and invisible characteristics. We celebrate our differences because they allow us to grow together.
Information and application:
Are you excited? Send your application (cv and motivation letter) before May 1, via the application form on our website. Unfortunately, we will not process applications that come to us in any other way. If there are enough applications, the vacancy can be closed earlier, so respond immediately.
